Summary

Balancing employee wellbeing with the demands of work is one of the defining challenges of our time. Absence rates are now at a 15-year high, with employees taking an average of 9.4 days off each year. Mental ill-health is the leading cause of long-term sickness absence and the second most common cause of short-term absence. (CIPD Health & Wellbeing at Work Report 2025)

Mental health coaching offers a proactive, practical solution. Research from the Institute of Employment Studies shows that wellbeing coaching can significantly boost resilience and mental health, reduce staff turnover, strengthen team relationships, and help employees feel more confident in managing pressure and supporting others.

Introduction to Mental Health Coaching

Mental health coaching is a growing trend in corporate wellness initiatives. Mental health coaching provides individuals with structured support to strengthen wellbeing and achieve personal or professional growth. A mental health coach focuses on building resilience, increasing engagement, developing practical strategies, and helping people move towards future goals.

Unlike therapy, which often explores past experiences or clinical diagnoses, coaching is forward-looking and centred on present challenges and ambitions. It offers a proactive approach to enhancing mental health and equipping individuals with the tools to thrive in both work and life.

How Altruist Mental Health Coaching Works

Our coaching sessions are designed to be flexible and effective. They can be delivered one-to-one or in small groups, most often online, with each session lasting 60 minutes. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly or bi-weekly, and we recommend a minimum of six to achieve meaningful results.

Because the process is centred on the individual, coaching can be tailored to align with specific professional development goals. In addition to structured programmes, sessions can also be booked on demand, giving employees access to support precisely when they need it.

Key Benefits of Mental Health Coaching

Human-led and person-focused, Altruist coaching is built on genuine connection and understanding, ensuring every individual feels heard, supported, and empowered. The key benefits of mental health coaching for employees include:

Increasing confidence and self-awareness

Employees gain a deeper understanding of their strengths, values, and working styles. With improved self-awareness, they are better able to manage workloads and make decisions aligned with their goals.

Preventing and managing burnout

Coaching helps individuals recognise early signs of stress and overwhelm, develop healthier boundaries, and create sustainable working practices. This proactive support reduces the risk of burnout and supports long-term wellbeing.

Supporting personal growth and development

Coaching encourages employees to explore their goals and potential, both professionally and personally. This fosters a sense of progress and fulfilment, boosting motivation and overall job satisfaction.

Equipping employees with practical coping tools

Coaches share evidence-based techniques and strategies to navigate challenges such as high-pressure situations, organisational change, or conflict. These tools enable staff to respond constructively to stressors.

Building resilience and managing stress more effectively

Employees learn how to adapt positively to setbacks and maintain focus during demanding periods. Over time, this strengthens resilience and supports sustained performance.

Enhancing engagement and retention

When people feel supported and empowered, they are more engaged in their roles and more committed to the organisation. This leads to improved productivity, reduced turnover, and a healthier workplace culture.

Strengthening communication and interpersonal relationships

Coaching helps individuals develop active listening, and constructive communication skills. This improves collaboration, strengthens team dynamics, and reduces workplace conflict.
